The purpose of this case study was to report data from a clinical evaluation of an individual with fascioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSHMD) while using a manual medicare power wheelchairs versus the same wheelchair fitted with pushrim activated power-assisted wheelchair hubs (PAPAW). An individual with FSHMD was tested for change in heart rate (HR), rate of perceived exertion (RPE), propulsion speed (PS), time to completion (TC), and qualitative observation in a community-based environment. A modified Physiological Cost Index (mPCI) was calculated post hoc. Results indicate HR and mPCI for the PAPAW trials were lower; RPE was “Hard” for manual wheelchair propulsion and “Fairly or Very Light” for the PAPAW trials; PS was twice as fast in both conditions using the PAPAW; and TC was 53% faster with PAPAW than in the manual wheelchair. Qualitatively, the manual propulsion conditions had exaggerated trunk and hip flexion with simultaneous scapula elevation and upward rotation to initiate downward force on the hand rim more so than the PAPAW conditions. The data suggest that propulsion of a power wheelchairs enhanced by PAPAW is more energy efficient, biomechanically advantageous, and more timesaving than a manual wheelchair for the tested individual with FSHMD in his environment.

A preliminary study on the impact of pushrim-activated power-assist wheelchairs among individuals with tetraplegia
OBJECTIVES: This preliminary study was to evaluate the impact of pushrim- activated
power wheelchairs (PAPAWs) on mobility, community participation, satisfaction, and psychosocial impact among individuals with tetraplegia. DESIGN: Fifteen manual wheelchair users with tetraplegia completed a 4-wk protocol including a 2-wk trial where they used their personal wheelchairs for mobility and a 2-wk trial where they were provided with a PAPAW and could choose either wheelchair for mobility. The mobility levels with both wheelchairs were recorded by a datalogger. Participants completed daily questionnaires regarding community participation and medical scooters their satisfaction with the wheelchair used. The Psychosocial Impact of Assistive Devices Scale was used to compare the psychosocial impact of PAPAWs with their personal wheelchairs. RESULTS: Participants chose to use PAPAWs and their personal wheelchairs at a similar frequency in the PAPAW trial. The distances traveled with both wheelchairs were not statistically different (P = 0.09). Participants traveled significantly faster with PAPAWs (P = 0.03). PAPAWs did not result in significantly greater community participation, satisfaction, and psychosocial impacts than the personal wheelchairs. CONCLUSIONS: PAPAWs could be a viable mobility option for individuals with tetraplegia, which can provide independent mobility especially for outdoor activities. That Urine Smell is Gone!
I have 7 cats, and I have a plastic tablecloth that had been peed on.

Wheelchair-related physical restraints, lap belts, and other alternatives are intended to provide safe and adequate seating and mobility for individuals using wheelchairs. Nine studies reported the frequency of asphyxial deaths caused by physical restraints, nine studies reported the long-term complication and indirect adverse effects of physical restraints and lap-belt use, and seven studies reported the benefits of physical restraints and lap belts with individuals using power wheelchairs, www.easymedonline.com. 2. Try and get a friend for their opinion about a company, not to join with you but just to
help you make a decision.

7. Avoid high start up costs. They are usually a sign that a company is just looking to make a
profit and not to provide a useful, quality product. Think about it, why should you pay an
outrageous amount to start a business? What purpose would it serve except to give someone else

8. What is required before you actually get a check? Make sure you understand how you will get
paid and what is required for you to get paid before starting.
9. Does the company provide support and training? Support is extremely important, you will need
help and you will need training. Who is your sponsor? How long have they been with the company

Design features of portable wheelchair ramps and their implications for curb and vehicle access.
This study evaluated a range of portable wheelchair ramps to highlight the effect of different product features on ease of use when power wheelchairs
And medicare power wheelchairs users climb curbs or access vehicles. Twelve portable ramps were evaluated. Although all the ramps were designed to load powered wheelchairs into motor vehicles, they were manufactured in different designs. The ramps were based on a “singlewide” platform or “channel” design. Some ramps had fixed dimensions, whereas others could be reduced in size because they were telescopic or designed to allow folding. Overall, the ramps could be divided into four subgroups on the basis of their key features. These were horizontally and longitudinally folding ramps, telescopic ramps, and ramps with fixed dimensions. The telescopic ramps could be subdivided into “U”-shaped gutter ramps and reverse profile ramps. Product appraisals and trials involving wheelchair users and caregivers of wheelchair users were done to evaluate each of these ramp designs. Although wheelchair ramps are available in a wide range of designs and configurations, we found that no single ramp design successfully met the needs of all wheelchair users or their caregivers. The evaluation highlighted a number of specific problems and potential hazards. Some ramps were found to move during a maneuver, showed poor stability when used with some vehicles, or were too narrow to allow wheelchair castors to pass through the channel without jamming. Some features, such as handles and locking mechanisms, influenced the ease with which the caregivers could use the ramps. Wheelchair users preferred the wide platform ramps because they were able to drive up these with ease and little preparation. The caregivers preferred folding or telescopic channel ramps because these were easier to handle and store.
